About @#$%ing time you finished your thesis (Good on ya!). If you would have had competent first thesis advisor you could have had your PhD dissertation done by now and would have learned how to enjoy your time in airports. Remember to smile pretty for your US Customs photo and chant "USA!USA!"
Ah ha ha, you're flying United! I had the worst experience flying with them - the exact same route you are on about three weeks ago. Hope your luggage doesn't get lost and you don't get rerouted through San Francisco - not that there's anything wrong with San Francisco. But I ended up spending about 11 hours in Sydney airport wanting to top myself from pure boredom, so I can feel your pain.
But anyway, have a great time in New York. It's an amazing city, but don't be afraid to go out into the burbs or to ask people for advice. Brooklyn is cool, and there's some great shopping to be found south of 14th street. Check out a second hand book store just off Union Sq called The Strand. And the subway!
The Empire State building is rip off. Don't bother with it. If you want to see a good view of the city there are plenty of other tall buildings with viewing platforms around the place.
