On the contrary, the whole world knew war was coming, and was convinced that Israel would lose badly, and perhaps be destroyed. It was certainly expected to be a tough war; in Jerusalem alone, 10,000 graves were prepared for the expected casualties. That made the yeshuah that came such an obvious miracle, like the one of Purim.

And at that time almost the whole world, even the lefties, were pro-Israel; Israel didn't become the imperialist enemy until it won the war. The world loves mourning dead Jews, or aiding the pitiful survivors; it's triumphant Jews that the world has a problem with.
