Is he as scary as he looks?
Well, that's what we don't know. He's not stupid, but is one of those people who's so intelligent and well-educated that - deliberately or otherwise - they don't feel it necessary to go out of their way to consider how people unlike them might react to what they say. And he's been editing The Spectator (a weekly for smart-ass rightwingers who love showing off their contrarianism on things like class and race issues) for some years. He has a reputation as a bumbler in the world of TV, which was putting him well on the way to jokey "national treasure" status, as long as he stuck to quiz shows. What he will do in a job that requires him to get hugely different organisations to work together on high-level strategic planning as well as delivering massive infrastructure projects (not to mention policing), across a range of cultures he doesn't know about except (by implication) to dismiss.... well, who knows?
