Gravatar Irresistible indeed. Not a bit of Belgium that I've visited. The tower may yet lure me across.

Gravatar I guess you've already tried all the alternative activity holidays: naked yoga in India, yurt-making in mongolia, tie-dying in Wales...

Gravatar Lulu, I'm shuddering as I write..

Gravatar I received this comment on my blog and thought I should forward it to you:

Dear Mr Broadhurst
I meant to write to the author of the blog autolycus but it does not seem possible so it is you that I will trouble.
Could you please tell me what "autolycus" means ?
I know that "auto" means "by itself" like in automobile but I am at my wits end concerning LYCUS which I presume comes from the greek which I have not studied.
D'avance merci.
Bien à vous.
Claude Vergne

Ken

Gravatar Ken, I can't see any other way of replying - is the comment still there, or can you pass on:

Autolycus is a character in Shakespeare's "A Winter's Tale". I borrowed it because he describes himself as "a snapper-up of unconsidered trifles" (actually, he's a petty thief). The "lycus" part of the name derives from the Greek for "wolf" - so Shakespeare calls him a "lone wolf" (as metaphorically he is in the play).

Gravatar From the Wikipedia entry on St. Rumbold:
"He is said to have been the brother of St. Himelin."
Brothers in Grace?
I wonder if there's a Ste. Slocombe...

Gravatar Stephen: If you say it with a French accent, it sounds as though there ought to be. No connection of course with St Uncumber, who grew a beard in order to protect her from marriage to a pagan king.

Gravatar Please Google Barbara + Gottingen. You probably know of this 60s French singer already but hey!
