Dude, my ancestors were on the Mayflower as well. My grandmother is inordinately proud of that fact. I never quite know what to make of it, myself.

Even though I love holidays like this because I get to spend them with friends and family, I have felt the same way.

I like the way you just get to the point. I think Thanksgiving for me is just about family and friends. Because when I really think about it, I feel the way you do.
I watched a show on the History channel the other day about the "Untold Story of the Mayflower" and all that they went through and put the Indians through. It was quite interesting really.
Have a great day anyway

Populations have moved, migrated and shifted from the moment there were human societies. It began with Cro-Magnon overwhelming the Neanderthal. It happened in North America before anybody from Europe came over as tribes vied for the best lands. Now that your overwrought conscience is served, go have some turkey and be quiet.

I try to think of "Thanksgiving" in a secular, international kind of way. A lot of cultures celebrate the fall harvest, which is what I like to think of Thanksgiving as. Just happy some fruit and vegetables popped out of the ground! Sustaining life for another year.
It's a more natural, less evil option than being thankful that pilgrims killed off the people who, if they hadn't been so kind, may still be thriving today?!

I got here through Denise's link. You took the words right out of my mouth. Oh, and who's the most famous Indian I know? Why, the Chief from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, of course.

Mayflower? Me too. I don't think anyone in my (immediate-ish) family even knew it until I stumbled over it a few years back.

Robin, is that sarcasm, m'dear?
Denise, yes, and drink. Lots.
Tracy, in my opinion, it means no more than if someone arrived yesterday.
Kyle, thanks for the visit and comment.
Soda, any day with tons of food is a good day. I just decided to be glib about it.
RW, leave it to you to set me straight!
Mist, I hope I brought a tear to your eye.
Cat, yeah, I know. Evil is fun, though.
Barb, thanks for the visit and comment!
M, we're obviously related.
RW, I didn't say I wanted to give it back . . .

Heh. I guess my view on the whole Indian thing is a bit skewed; I live about four blocks away from Haskell Indian Nations University, and the vast majority of my immediate neighbors are native. They're a pretty pissy lot, from what I've observed; delivering pizza to the dorms there was always a trip, since half the time I ended up running back to my car swinging a mag lite as a bunch of asshats threatened my life and. . .um. . .purity. I tried to explain that my people were too busy living in ghettos and getting all pogrom-ed to be killing and raping their people back in the day, but they just weren't buying it.
I'm with Killer. Oppress away.

You know, i have a theory.
I think that one third of the people who say their ancestors were on the Mayflower are full of shit. It balances out with the one third of all people who say they are Native American and, are full of shit as well.
Everyone else is Jewish. Hitler knew that, ergo, he feared.
Trust a bitch. That's how it went.

The freakish thing about Native American stereotypes is that they're kind of self-fulfilling prophecies.
In Wisconsin, reservations are among the poorest communities. They're cesspools of despair. Crime and alcoholism are rampant. Most people seem unemployed and everyone seems poor. Schools are crumbling. Every road is terrible, except the ones that lead to the casino.
Communities like that are poverty machines. The circumstances are so bad that each new generation is virtually guaranteed to end up exactly like the one before it: no opportunity, no hope.

That desciption implies corruption within the nation. My experience is that, on a communal basis, native communities have been improved from that revenue by the tribes themselves.
And I wouldn't dismiss the casinos - what better way to get some resources back than to take them from stupid white people happy to give it to you?
Almost like a poetic justice in some ways.

Su, I am so confused. Britishness?
CP, you're always right, so I trust you.
Britt, thanks! Shouldn't kudos be accompanied by boobs?
Joe, I think that many stereotypes become self-perpetuating, which is why it's a difficult line deciding whether you're being racist or observant when you talk about stereotypes.
RW, the casinos are good for the group that run them, but what other thing are Indians known for? Nothing, it's very sad.
Misery, I did. Thanks for the visit and comment.

Think back to the episode of the Simpsons where Homer becomes Burns' "prank monkey".
Homer rides a float as Chris Cringle, remember? One of the first floats or so is actually a redskinned indian with a gigantic bobbing head.
I never ever noticed it before, recently I did and began laughing beyond control.

You are decended from John Alden & Pricilla Mullins. There was this little epic poem written about them ("Courtship of Miles Standish"). I had to read it in 7th grade, not as good as the Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner but....epic story short, 45yr old Standish hires 20yr old John to court 18yr old Mullins to be Standish's wife after his first wife and Mullins family die in the first winter. Obviously this backfires and the 2 young people fall in love and Standish lets them marry and thats where we came from.
I have the lineage at my moms, but it is not the Leary side, it is the Wilder side. Leah Pauline Leary nee Wilder, daughter of Miles Standish Wilder was your Great Grandmother. I am so good for supplying useless family facts
