I was gonna post this in my blog ( I may still) but then i realized i mainly wanted to respond to you specifically on some of these.
Obviously we discovered long ago our shared book obsession
(question were you ever grounded and not allowed to read books? that was the worst punishment EVER for me, i convinced my parents they couldnt stop me from reading the bible, and so i read the first few books of the old testament repeatedly just to feed my addiction) and i eternally thank you for introducing me to Spenser & Hawk.
Curious tho, I alphabetize by author, then by chronological order, especially for Parker, Kellerman, Clancy etc, cuz its the best way to instantly grab the next book in the story when i am rereading. You find alpha by title just as convenient?? oh and the only ones i don't alpha order are my holocaust books, those are by height.
And i was a minor legend at school and work for my ability to walk and read simultaneously...people alway thought it would be funny to try to get me to walk into them and were annoyed when i just dodged by without looking up.
okay, now that i have officially established myself as an enormous nerd, i am gonna go now lol
I thought the little Hobbit/P Jackson movie series was pretty boring... although I enjoyed reading the book when I was twelve... so either my tastes have changed or the book is simply better...?!

Amy Grounding in my house involved no: TV, radio, phone, going out or Reading, but reading was by far the worst. i would sneak into their closet where they would out the confiscated books and sneak one or two into the bathroom, then take 4 hr long baths...thats was the extent of my bad-ass behavior growing up....
but hey the method worked, I was only grounded about 5 times because i feared it so much i was on my best behavior (although i almost always even got grounded for bad grades, never bad behavior)
it would have been messed up to encourage reading then take it away, but they never needed to encourage, i was reading 2+ books a day on average from 2nd grade on...
hey, it all paid off when the SAT's rolled around, my vocabulary was extensive and i knew how to use the words correctly, even if i couldn't pronounce them.

Since you dig characters, too, I'm going to suggest you check out the "Dexter" books by Jeff Lindsay. He's my new favorite author, and Dexter is my new favorite literary character.
Mitzi, yeah, I prefer the earlier books, too. Now it's all sex and orgasms and no killing, which sucks. You're the second person to recommend the Dexter books, so I'm definitely going to give them a try.
My husband always takes off the dust jackets. It drives me crazy. I will find a dust jacket, and the book is gone, or there is a book with no dust jacket and the title isn't on the cover.
I like to use the dust jacket as a bookmark myself. And I too, find the hardcover books to be hard on the legs while reading on the throne.
