Chandigarh, July 23 In a twist to the Promila murder case, the UT Police arrested the deceased’s father and brother on Wednesday, on charges of murder.
According to the police, Promila’s father Jaswant Singh and brother Sunil murdered her in order to save the honour of the family as she had got pregnant before marriage. Promila, a resident of Kajheri, was found dead on Sunday. The killers had poured acid on her face to avoid identification.
It is the contradictions in the statements of Jaswant, Sunil and Kaushalya, Promila’s mother, which made the police suspicious. They are yet to ascertain the involvement of Kaushalya in the crime.
Being a midwife, the police said, it was not difficult for Kaushalya to find out that her daughter was pregnant. When she told Jaswant about it, he asked her to carry out an abortion but since Promila was five months pregnant, abortion was risky and Kaushalya had to drop the plan, said UT SSP S S Srivastava.
He said the family had assured Promila of marrying her off to the person who had impregnated her, but when she refused to disclose his name, her father and brother hatched a conspiracy to kill her. The two allegedly took Promila to a secluded place on some pretext and killed her.
“They first strangulated the girl and then bludgeoned her with a stone before pouring acid on her face,” said the SSP. “The two also tore off her clothes to suggest a rape attempt,” said Srivastava.
After murdering Promila, the two returned home in the morning. “When Promila’s elder sister asked them about her, the two could not give any convincing reply,” the SSP told mediapersons.

TWO Indian expatriates ended up in court after traffic officers allegedly caught them making love in a parked car.

The U.S. government and military has employed thousands of Iraqis since the 2003 invasion, and many have been killed or faced the threat of death from insurgents who view them as collaborators.
The U.S. government has been criticized for not doing enough to protect them.
Richard Albright, the U.S. embassy's senior coordinator for refugee issues, said Iraqis who worked for the United States longer than three months since March 20, 2003, may be eligible.
"Applicants must show they ... have experienced an ongoing serious threat as a result of that employment," Albright said. He added: "the recipients receive permanent residence in the United States; they can stay for the rest of their lives."

Beloved friend of me & my kids.....when the seven of 'em were still young, & we were poor & stuck in the middle of the hot city, he & his wife had us come up to their huge cabin on the cleanest lake in MN, for a week, every summer....pontoon boat, row boat, canoe, water skiing, shore games, wilderness, food coming out of our ears.....my kids loved it!
My best memory of him is, a few years ago, at the wake for his wife......he was stone deaf by then, is a big, big man, tall and wide ......he stood at the thin doorway where the line of people had to pass through from the lobby into the room where the casket was.....graciously nodding his head to all the well-wishers as they passed him, and though not able to hear a thing, a big, big smile lighting up his face from ear to ear......it had such an effect that the room everyone was entering became a joyous celebration.......I cannot think of him without that picture in my mind, and it always sets me to giggling, way deep down in my soul, all the way to the top of me and out into the air!

you know what was a bit unexpected? i had thought that i had just gained weight (like another 10 or 20 pounds) since this all restarted in late January just from being unhealthy and too miserable to exercise (it hurt to swim!). my tummy was sticking WAY out! i kept worrying that some poor soul would ask me when i was due and then would feel bad when i told 'em no, just fat. anyway, i should have known that most of that was due to the internal problems - parts were swollen. and now, it's going back down to normal. yay.
Well, actually, that word "just" in there, Kirly, is a red flag to me.....ask my kids & they'll tell you they do not dare to use it around me.....

Had the appendix out in '65 or '66 and was in hospital post-op for 10 days (unimaginable today). Gas pains were so bad they were giving me morphine. I was, like, 10 yrs old.
Years later I rushed to the hospital for a sharp pain near my heart. It was a gas bubble that was pressing a nerve against a rib.
I hope you're better soon.
Of course when I thought I was "just" having bad gas pains, it turned out to be an umbilical hernia.

There was not a ton to object to, and indeed a lot to like, in Obama's speech in Berlin. Although I think I preferred it the first time I heard it, when it was sung by all those celebrities and rock stars back in the mid-80s.
Oh, wait, that was "We Are The World."
