Israel has been adopted by the left as a pet project; they have totally assumed the "blame the victim" posture, claiming that Israelis, because they are intelligent, well-educated, successful, and -- and here is the kicker -- thoroughly westernized to the point of being practically the quintessence of modern European social democracy, are thereby enjoined to assume upon themselves all of the guilt and discomfiture of the West for centuries of "imperialism." Israel becomes the product of imperialism and, simultaneously, the chief manifestation of imperialism. For Israel to earn the right to survive (in their eyes) it must constantly atone for the (perceived) sins of western civilization.

So do the leftists believe that Israel will play the role assigned to it? Why not? Olmert certainly seems willing. Do they think that should Israel continue to play this role it will survive? Their ideology tells them it will, even though the facts and history do not support such a conclusion. But the lives of millions of Jews can be wagered against the purity of ideology, and (they believe) the ideology is true: atone sufficiently and the threat will disappear.

It is a line of political thinking only slightly removed from pagans propitiating the angry sky god by sacrificing their children. And it will likely be just as effective.

But worry not, for the purity of the ideology will be preserved no matter what.

To the leftist, ideas are more important than people. And, increasingly it seems, especially if those people happen to be Jews.
