In the act of dying when you are awake and alive enough to know what is going on there is little sorrow. Even the act itself is without great drama. Except for the moment when you realize the body you so disdain is your own, and the life you are backing away from is yours. That is a moment worthy of reflection. There is no moment of “oh how I shall miss uncle Frumke and Mama’s stuffed cabbage.” There is no longing to say once more ‘Children I have loved you so!” No, the business of the dead is of the dead. How reasonable it is then that Jesus Himself, Jew that He was knew to say, “Let the dead bury the dead.” Because he knew the dead were not of the living.
But now we come to the idea of the non-aware dying. The creature poor thing lying a bed in what we perceive to be a “coma” an awareness not of our understanding. Someone who is separated from us by a veil of consciousness we cannot penetrate and cannot negotiate. One whose eyes move but in a meaningless rhythm from side to side, whose lips grow dry and chapped and need moisture to keep from splitting and cracking. Whose arms and legs must be manipulated daily to keep them from curling into positions that resemble trees gone gnarled and headed back towards death and whence they came. We oil their skin, we prick their fingers to measure blood sugar and prick their legs and arms with insulin. We empty their bladders and we make sure their brains leak enough fluid to keep from making the damage any worse than...what? The half death they already enjoy? Yet, half death is not death. You are dead or you are alive-it doesn’t come in pieces or fractions. It is an absolute. Death is absolute. Life is absolute. These piteous creatures are no less God’s children than you or I. They simply are, and we owe them, the most vulnerable among us the protection we would give any helpless living being. They cannot tell you that they are still IN THERE. They don’t care what you do because they inhabit another place. But they are alive. The dignity of life is still attached to them. God still hears their prayers as He speaks languages we don’t. Maybe He listens most closely to those He has sent to test our ability to love.
Thus we come to the idea of being one or the other. If you are 3 minutes or 8 or 10 weeks into conception you are jolly well alive. The scientific rules for life are pretty darn easy to understand.

Respiration
These are not complicated things. They exclude viruses for instance, which are neither alive nor dead, unless they attach to a host, then they mimic life. (Rather like liberals who attach to your money and seem to be alive until they kill the host.) It excludes rocks, which don’t do much of any of those things. The list does include Terri Schiavo because she did move, eat, excrete, and react to pain and breathe. She was alive until they starved and dehydrated her to death. Then she wasn’t alive any more. And we were all poorer for it.
I apologize for the length of this post. I am not really qualified to preach at anyone and God knows I am no writer without someone to edit me. But this was bothering me and I wanted very much to tell people what matters to me. I have written several letters to the various Church people who will forward them to Rome asking that they please let this girl live and not join the death eaters who are making death a growth industry. It is all I can do from the vantage point of life.

I have posted this before. I had a long talk about this with a very learned priest friend of mine. He agreed and told me that while I fight the good fight I need to think less about it and pray more that the people who are really able to do something to change the policies will do so.

Yesterday someone called the vet's office and said their mother had run over a baby rabbit. They were frantic. The little thing was still breathing.
If you know anything about rabbits you know that once their bones are broken it is certain death. Their spines are too fragile and once they snap that's it.
But these folks wanted to bring it in and spend all kinds of money to make it live.
I told them that by the time they got to the vet, the bunny would be gone.
But they wanted it to live. They could not belieive there was nothing they could do.
