Besides Dostoevksi, another Russian thinker who wrote about suffering, where great gifts are given and great wisdom is learned but only with much pain and struggling, was Nikolai Berdyaev.
The suffering of Christ in the crucifixion, both thinkers believed, cannot be understood through rationalism or scientism, but only through the wisdom of Christian and existential mysticism. And yet it happened here on this earth, in this physical universe that is determinedby causal laws.
This act of beneficial suffering and pure selfless love deosn't fit the paradigm of the pleasure principle, the survival of the fittest or rational systems of morality.
I find I am coming "back home" to read them.
