You just don't get it. Noise, be it rock'n roll or Mozart, is as invasive as smoke. When someone smokes, the smoke inevitably invades other people's space and pollutes their lungs. They haven't asked for it, they don't want it and they righlty condemn the selfish smoker for polluting others. It's the same thing with noise. You're in your selfish little world, assuming that you have a right to make whatever noise you want, and completely ignore the fact that noise of any sort by definition will always invade someone else's space. That's ok when the people whose space is invaded agree with that invasion, such as people who go to a concert. They WANT to hear that specific noise, and it is their right to do so. But if they are not interested in hearing any type of noise created by others, YOU have no right to IMPOSE it on everybody else. The sign of a civilized individual is someone who is careful not to step on other people's property, including their auditory space. One who ignores such boundaries is a selfish bastard who only deserves scorn. Which one will you be?
Argh! I love me some Mozart, and I love me some rock n' roll. But the truth is this: how did she decide that her class was more important than your class? ANDDDDDD if your noise was, indeed disturbing her, certainly there was a way to say it that didn't imply that your class wasn't trying to learn, too!

Actually, Angel, YOU don't get it.
I am teaching a class on gangsters in popular culture, and there's inevitably going to be "noise" coming from my classroom. Furthermore, the class is held in the Theatre Arts building, hardly a quiet venue. I maintain the teacher's response to yesterday's class was less about my being a selfish, noise-polluting bastard than her being a cultural elitist, assuming that somehow rap music can't count as a valid object of inquiry.

That is silly, music is not the same as smoke. Smoke gives you cancer, music might be annoying, but it doesn't endanger your life.
