I'm pretty jealous of your free weekend, vegging out sounds good to me these days.

Gravatar I don't know Luke. What with all these cheap flights to places in Europe and the Alps and the Pyrenees and the mountains of Italy so close, it shouldn't be that hard to find a few decent mountains, should it? At least that's the logic I'll be using when I finally go home. Can't you fly to places like Venice for about 15 pence return these days???

Gravatar Your bit about Mt. Sinai reminded me of all the Vermont weekends of my childhood. We had a lot of mountaintop church services. There's just something about a mountaintop... I climbed up with some gap year students 2 years ago. I was way behind them and when I finally caught up with them they were reading Psalms.

I love your photo of Iwaki... I think you must take more photos of Mount Iwaki than we do - and we take a lot! Although we may actually take more photos of the cats. All our photo albums are punctuated regularly by Mt. Iwaki and the cats.

Next time you're in Aji, why don't you pop down for a visit.

Gravatar Hugh, the free weekend was quite a treat in a way. I just remember how I felt before the snow got here, and it makes me guilty that I'm not ripping it up each opportunity I get..

Tom, there are always the cheap European flights, you're right. Something a short drive away would be sweet though. Also, there's nothing quite like living in a town with a beautiful mountain backdrop. I really don't want to leave that behind.

Laurie, Vermont sounds beautiful, and always does in the imaginations of British people. I don't know why, but it brings images of mountains and wildlife whenever I hear the name. Next time I'm on the coastline I'll drop by.

Gravatar Luke,

It sounds like it's the solitude and the beauty that you love most about the mountains. And if you can get some skiing in, all the better. Why don't you think about moving to Scotland when you get back (I am!) - the mountains are smaller but there's real wilderness there.

Gravatar Peace Luke....on Malcolm X: that wasn't a personality test. It was a post to honor his contributions. The 21st marked 40 years since his assassination.

Gravatar Malcom X. Was he before or after Luther King? Forgive my poor knowledge of African American history, but I wouldn't know who came first out of Chuchill and Chamberlain, and I'm a politics major.

Jossy, are you really moving to Scotland? What happened to Canada? I thought you just moved to London?? If you go up to Scotland and start up a little business, fine wines or something like that, then I'll be back with all the capital I can get my cool hands on, ready to be your partner old boy. We'll gaze across that hundred mile void together.

Gravatar No, I'm not off to Scotland now. Maybe in a few years though - we're talking about it...

Gravatar I like the idea Luke.
If you're really interested in Mt McKinley, I can advise you the following: "Into the Wild" written by John Krakauer.
It's about a young american lad, who goes for a surviving trip through the fields and mountains of America. And ending up in the frozen forests in Alaska during spring. Burning his money before taking out into the wild... It's extremely fascinating knowing that it all really happenend, no fiction involved.
You really have to read it, it'll bring you closer to nature, fulfilling an even greater part than dreaming about trips upto mountains.

Gravatar I'll see if I can get a copy Jan, thanks.
