Many surprises, that's right. But only in Japan do they come in the form of stethoscopes. My bike isn't too fancy, Joss, but I'll see if I can post one of it soon.
Luke, is there something I'm missing about the seasonal behaviour of Buna trees? You must have so much more tree knowledge than your average JET with those forest hikes of yours 
Next time I'll take one of those long white doctors coats into the woods with me. I'm sure I could borrow one from an English teacher at school

hey luke. i went to mini shirakami back in october with the ichi-nenseis and tried the stethoscope, too. apparently, in the fall, you can actually hear the sap running through the trunk. i heard it and was pleasantly surprised

Maybe fall is the season to go then. Not sure if I fancy using a stethoscope after it's been wedged in the ears of 150 fifteen year olds though.
