This may be a bit text-dense for S, but in terms of a long-range pb history of Native peoples, you might want to try:
THE PEOPLE SHALL CONTINUE by Simon Ortiz (Acoma) and illustrated by Sharol Graves, Children's Book Press, 1998. For all of its poetry and brevity, this oral chronicle of the history of Native peoples to present day is honest, inspiring, and surprisingly complete. Ages 5-up.

Hey, if you find anything good about Florida, maybe regarding the early explorers & all that, let me know, because it looks like we ARE moving to Florida! (Eek!) I thought my 7-year-old son would be interested in the history of the area, since there are many more years' worth of recorded history about that area than this one! Probably more chance to find buried treasure there, too.
