Many thanks for the recommendation of "Floating House" (we have "Nothing Here" and like it a lot). I've just discovered your blog by way of Chicken Spaghetti and am finding lots of things we can use in our home schooling (few trees out here, and no decent schools, sigh).

I'm old enough to have very fond memories of the first Day-Glo Crayola crayons...

Lane Smith has just come out with John, Paul, George, and Ben, which offers more humor than the average look at our Founders. They are, after all, the patriarchs of our national religion, and we're supposed to stay serious about that. As long as young readers can understand that not everything the book says must be taken as true, it could fill the hole you've identified.
