This sounds like it could be the historical/metaphorical background for a middle-grade novel. As in My Life as a Dog, but without the dog.

Thank you much, everybody. I remember now that James Stephenson's Don't You Know There's a War On was a big influence on my approach to this story, but I'm tickled to see Sendak and Selznick mentioned.

J. L., I haven't read My Life as a Dog (better to be without the dog than without the life), but I suspect now that I will soon...
