Gravatar I read my nearly four-year-old daughter "Snowflake Bentley" tonight. The last page shows a photo of him and she was so fascinated that this man she'd just seen 20 illustrations of was once a real guy.

Nonfiction picture books are a special brand of truth, aren't they? If I'd just told her an oral story about SB and then showed a photo, I don't think her reaction would have been as wondrous. Picture books allow us to accept more than one visual version of history. And since most of history was not photographed, picture books carry a most important weight.
