For what it's worth, I'm not sure what baseball symbolizes or represents, but there shore is a strong cultural inclination that it should mean something, though no one seems to care specifically what-- a methapor, a bellwhether, whatever. I've seen the same thing done to cricket. I wonder if there are children's books written about cricket in the same vein?
