Hi Iain
Your comments are spot on. I'm an A's fan and it seems as though there is a standard media 'this is what the A's are like' line that every commentator has to trot out: moneyball, on base percentage, Billy Beane blah blah blah. You seriously cannot watch an A's game without them mentioning these things, just as Manny is always Manny. It's just lazy shorthand commentating if you ask me.
In my MLB.tv experience, the NESN guys are one of the best pairings alongside the Braves' commentators, the D-Backs' (although Mark Grace is an acquired taste) and I quite like the Cubs' as well.
I happened to find your blog via a link on the Baseball Musings website and it's great to read other Englishmen writing about the sport. MLB.tv is undoubtedly a lifeline for me as well. When my workmates ask me whether I watched the latest episode of Doctor Who, I just grin and say "nope, I was watching the Rays against the White Sox". They all think I'm mad (or sad), but I'm convinced that I'm the only sane one in the office!
