To the People

Would you be on the same side if Alexandria was trying to go around a state law prohibiting municipalities from allowing smoking? Or is this more of a disagreement with the subject matter than the idea of home rule v. state control?

I'm for whichever law grants an individual more rights over his own posessions. Rights maximization. At first glance, I don't care whether it's a fed, state or local law.

I think Baylen has exactly the right take on this. It is not about jurisdictional control, i.e. state versus fed versus local, but about individual freedom versus government control in general.

I work in Alexandria and dine out here frequently. I can vouch that many, if not most, restaurants around here are already smoke-free.

Off the top of my head, Misha's and the Stardust are the only two places I can think of that I have smoked in.

Yeah, it's a short list. Theisman's permits smoking, too, or at least it did when I lived there a coupla years ago.
