That is a great quote. I think I will send it to every member of the DC Council except for Carol Schwartz. The organizers of the DC smoking ban should also get a copy. Trans fats are next on the list freedom loves. Today's Post contains a letter to the editor from a doctor arguing that the goverment ought to treat trans fats "like lead, asbestos or smoking." Another zealot writes that sodium is the real devil in restaurant foods because they put it in "largely without consumers' knowledge or consent."

Eh? Is McDonald's force-feeding me french fries in my sleep?

I'm not entirely sure the quote is actually true, unless one simply looks at "well-meaning" Western communists and assumes that Stalin and Mao and Pol Pot must have been "well-meaning" also.

But nevertheless, the core idea deserves a lot of attention. That old cliche about the road to hell didn't get famous by being _false_, after all.
