What amazes me is that people complain about working for minimum wage at Wal-Mart yet the average hourly wage for an illegal immigrant in DC doing yard work is $10/hour, almost twice the Wal-Mart wage. So why aren't the angry Wal-Mart workers lining up for lawn work?
Plus you can't find an electrician or plumber here. They make $80K on average and the job requires less than a year of training. I literally can't find someone to fix my roof as the roofers in DC are so backlogged and my job is not expensive enough for them.
Complaining Wal-Marters should take a free Pell grant (not a loan, just a giveaway) get training in roofing or HVAC and then they will make big money. There is no dearth of skilled jobs, just of skilled applicants.

the real barrier is draconian licensure laws that make it really expensive to get trained as a plumber or electrician.
