To the People

I may be alone here, but I don't get Palahniuk. I read his Portland, Oregon travel guide and thought it sucked. And (full disclosure: I didn't read his book) in spite of digging the three stars of Fight Club (Edward Norton was at one time actually cool), I thought the plot was so weak as to be non-existent, and the twist at the end was idiotic. That said, I also find horror movies -- and especially the genre Chuck's referring to, "'cycle' movies" -- as boring as they are (infrequently) frightening.

dude, i was totally going to ask you if you finished reading it.

Palahniuk is a great story teller and I think his essay about cycle horror movies explains why. He sees those characters for who they are and what they give to their audience and doesn't let himself by disappointed by their shallowness. This is the exact opposite of the characters in his stories who are often disappointed in either their own shallowness or the shallowness of others.
