To the People

My comment was pro-Leonardo. Many of these Guard troops, when they come home from Iraq, take off the tan uniforms, put on their old black ones and go right back to invading our homes the next day.

this kind of stuff happens because of the defacto draft we have. We can't take the army reserves and national guard and put them in stressful situations and not expect things like this to happen. This is in no way a knock on the guard or the reserves, or anybody serving in them. It's a knock at the bush administraiton.

During Vietnam many people became upset because the government was taking their children by force and sending them home in boxes.
Our current increase in reliance on National Guard troops serves to diminish this perception.
It's not Junior who's missing, it's Dad the heroic Cop/Drug Warrior/Fireman/Prison Guard.
Our local police have been merging with the military for several years.

I was with you up until the draft comment, which simply puzzled me. I can't defend Abu Grhaib, Haditha, or My Lai, and I think sending the military on ill-defined policing missions is going to create even worse carnage than our militarized SWAT teams at home.

But since one of those three indefensible atrocities was under a draft army, how is a draft army going to be better than a professional/volunteer one? In fact, what does one have to do with the other, or was that even your point?

Sandy, Vietnam wasn't a real draft, as anyone who had money or went to college or had connections (Cheney comes to mind) got a deferral. The only real draft we can recall is WWII.
