Have you seen the income tax tables? Two people with taxable income of $100,000 each pay about $1600 MORE in tax if they are married, than if they are single. They don't call it the marriage penalty for nothing.

Jimmy, some married couples do pay more but the majority of married couples pay less. The marriage benefit is greater than the penalty.

But the real question is: why does the IRS punish/reward people based on their marital status? The income tax is divisive and should go the way of the long distance call tax.
