To the People

Every time Richmond threatens to pass some new homophobic law I toy with the idea of moving back to the District. Then I remember why I left. Staring outside my window overlooking Connecticut Avenue and watching people merrily cross-country skiing down the road -- a full THREE DAYS after a snowstorm and thinking to myself, "This is why I pay taxes?" Pathetic. I'd love to hear the government's argument for why these ridiculous increases are warranted!

Shame on you for EVER taking any NYT economics article seriously.

Property taxes should have ZERO comparison to income taxes. What property taxes DO compare to is property VALUES. Which was only mentioned in the article once, and indirectly at that.

The problem of not considering increases in personal income (and for that matter, the problem of property taxes in general), is that someone could be taxed out of their home. With such dramatic tax increases that do not consider income increases, citizens will need to relocate to preserve their standard of living.

Real estate taxes are the same as rent payments to the king - you never own your land.
