To the People

i just laughed my ass off for the first time in days. classic.

If everyone in the US had a top rate like U2's of 5% in the Netherlands then we wouldn't be able to even pay our public employees their salaries. Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, transitional welfare and Social Security would have to go out the window. Would the US have money left to give to Africa? Nyet.

Put your money where your mouth is. And if you are a centimillionaire how dare you avoid taxes while sticking us wage earners with the bill.

It reminds me of Ben Affleck appearing at the DNC conf when he makes $20 million a pic.

Maybe Bono has had a clarifying moment and realized that he can do better things with his money than the Irish gubment. Reminds me of the time after katrina that the airhead america hosts were telling listeners to not send money to the government because they would just blow it. I tried to call and welcome them to reality.

I like the Bono bashing as much as the next guy, but this quote stuck out:

"This is, of course, income beyond the dreams of about 99% of artists..."

...which makes me wonder how many other Irish artists are affected by the new cap. Sounds to me like U2 is the only entity affected, which makes it look like it was targeted specifically at them. So they have good reason to be pissed off and move their company. It's also good reason for Bono to learn the economics of government, but he'd rather stroke his ego.

Is this just musical artists, or do writers and actors fall under the ruling also?

If one moves one's corporation to the Netherlands does one get to also move one's domicile to Amsterdam next to one's favorite coffeeshop?

Hey if I had the money I'd do the same thing. Nothing wrong with not wanting to give your money to the government.

I don't get this post. Don't we want a smaller role for government? Aren't we in favor of open markets? Bono and his bandmates are 'starving the beast' and looking for ways to hang on to the money they earned by going to a place where the government demands a smaller share of it. That way, U2 will even get to give more of their dough to charitable causes, if they so choose. I don't see anything wrong with the move, and I don't consider it inconsistent in the least.
