To the People

I am pro smoking generally but have an odd and angry take on this. I rented out my loft in Boston to two chain smokers who were so insane, three packs a day each and they both worked at home. The upstairs neighbors started sleeping in the hallway as the smoke was so bad. The condo association sued me. I spent thousands to install ceiling fans and an industrial strength smoke remover but it was still bad.

And then the smoking tenants sued me for 41 complaints under Boston housing law, including how the exposed brick in my loft caused their mutual emphesema (sp?). It took a year's salary to pay my lawyers to defeat that case, which haunted me for four years.

This couple made the front page of the Boston Globe for smokers' rights at their next apartment, which they also ended up in litigation with.
