I spent nine months in Balto when I first joined Legg Mason. It reminded me of Pburgh in that at lunch time if I went outside I was the only one in a business suit. Depressing.
Alex Brown's leaving was huge, as they had about 10,000 highly paid employees. The Legg capital markets group was also recently bought by Stifel Nicolas.
My cousin who used to work for Alex Brown and has since made a living with another Balto firm just left for NY. He has three kids and thinks that Balto is a dying city and finance people have no future there.
