Islam is similar to fundamentalist Catholicism or Protestantism. The thing it, liberal democracies and the counterbalance of The Reformation + The Enlightenment eroded power in the belief of divine right. So people believe in their gods and moral codes living along the lines as they see fit, but tended to hold their governments to a humanist moral standard. This prevents the ruling class to say "because God told me so". Except for Bush. He believes in the divine right of Cheney.

The real problem with Islam is that we aren't ready to wait 300-600 years for a reformation and enlightenment. Especially when they are building nuclear weapons and believe in an afterlife that kicks the ass of their present condition.
