To the People

Nicely put.

Unfortunately this study is close to useless since it doesn't try to account for any other factor except for average compensation, such as education level, to name but an obvious one. That said, for all the bitching and moaning government workers do approximately 7 out of every 8 hours on workdays, you don't see too many of them leaving for better jobs, which sort of indicates that they already have the best job they can get.

I spent 7 years working on a Federal site in DC as a contractor. I don't have the resources to fund my own study, but an average salary of $71K doesn't sound right - I'd take a close look at the numbers.

The free parking is a bit of a misdirect, too. Few if any Federal buildings have enough parking to accomodate more than a small fraction of the workers, so the spaces go to political appointees, a few senior career people, and winners of a lottery (it's in the union contract). They're also taxed on the value of the space based on nearby commercial rates.

Still a sweet deal, of course.
