To the People

Speaking of smoking bans, I live in Omaha, Nebraska. First they banned smoking in bars and restaurants in Omaha but they exempted bars that have keno and bars that do not sell prepared food. Then the state of Nebraska banned smoking statewide effective June 2009. Now I find out today that the Nebraska supreme court ruled the exemptions unconstitutional so now smoking will be banned everywhere in Omaha. Make sense of that. I guess I'd be better off just giving up smoking now. It'll be banned completely here pretty soon anyway.

Ya think?

Gotta love it when purportedly progressive Dems forward measures that will disproportionately impact lower-income folks with little access to smoking cessation products, much less treatment. I wonder how many will be evicted under this new proposed statute, and whether landlords will also have the discretion to command a toxicology screening that includes nicotine before offering a lease.

California is also finding out that demand for cigarettes isn't as inelastic as presumed, finding that tobacco tax revenues are on the decline as smoking trends move downward.
