There could indeed be a horrible version of ecstasy on the streets, not that I trust the Feds' announcement. But, as you point out, legalization would get rid of bad, tainted drugs. It would also remove the fear of users getting medical help in the case of an overdose or something else going wrong.

Textbook example of clueless drug enforcement officials.
Pills cut with meth where common during the hight of the rave scene, but I thought they were mostly a thing of the past now that MDMA is so damn cheap.
There have been deadly batches of ecstasy in the past, with adulturents such as PMA and DXM causing some deaths.
But believe it or not, the black market behaves a lot like any other market. Drug users (especially users of a non addictive drug like MDMA) are generally rational consumers, and don't want to take drugs that are likely to kill them. When scares like that happen, they scale back their consumption and only deal with trusted sources.
Drug dealers are also rational people, who most realize that its not good business to sell a product that kills your customer the first time they try it.
