To the People

My wife and I were trying to figure out if they considered human breast milk off limits? couldn't she feed her kid her own milk?

It does after all come from an animal, and I could see some wacky vegan reasoning like this.

I'm a vegan and a libertarian. I can understand the arguments given in the debate on foie gras, for example, and not offer a reflexive "don't hurt the ducks". And I've repeatedly argued against trans fat bans on my blog on the basis of personal liberty. Regardless of what I choose for myself, people have a right to be as smart or as stupid to themselves as they wish.

I'm also smart enough to realize that feeding soy milk and apple juice to a six-week old child is absurd. It wouldn't have mattered if it had been cow's milk and chicken broth, it still would've been inappropriate and insufficient for anyone, much less a six-week-old child. This story is about terrible parenting, not veganism.

As to whether or not human breast milk is off limits, that's a bizarre suggestion. Of course it's not off limits. One intellectual foundation for not drinking cow's milk is that it's designed for baby cows. Human breast milk is designed for baby humans. No vegan would argue otherwise. If a vegan did think that, the emphasis should be on "wacky", not vegan. Just like in this story.

I agree with Tony, although I was gonna phrase it closer to "Not all vegans are retarded. Breast milk is no less vegan than semen, and if semen weren't vegan, all the vegans I know would be really upset about it.

Yeah, but is human breast milk a gateway milk?
