having once lived in and reported on berkeley, i am so not surprised by this. the city is fascist and no fun and it's no suprise that flake-for-life kriss (a guy btw) is in favor of this. if it weren't for cal, berkeley would be a disaster.

A lot of people who are homeless have mental health issues and are on a variety of psycho-active drugs. Smoking actually helps to relieve some of the side-effects of those drugs, plus it calms them.

Health issues have to be weighed against other issues sometimes. If that doesn't sway your lefty friends, I don't know what will.
