It is a traditional sign of respect to give gifts when meeting people for business purposes. Granted, Bono is a bit hamfisted about it but the idea was sound. One of his gold records would have been better.

I agree with area man, to meet someone in Japan like that and not have a gift would be an insult in their culture.
