To the People

Funny you put that up here. I was just trying to do a thinking out-loud post about how I think (and I do mean think) that libertarians downplay the threat from Islamic radicals both in Western Europe and at home, with the emphasis on Western Europe. I think it goes hand-in-hand with the isolationist strain that runs through a lot of quasi-libertarians, and seems to be one of those ever-present qualifiers for being considered a true libertarian.

I'm much more worried about Europe than I am here....as of right now, but who knows what kind of statist cesspool we could be living in..in say the next 25-35 years...

It's not the terrorism that worries me. That seems to be overplayed, catchy campaign rhetoric. But a demographic invasion of Europe certainly doesn't seem to be out of the question. In of itself, a demographic shift wouldn't bring down Western Civilization, but the fact that too many of the folks having the babies and moving into the country are radicalized, unwilling to assimilate and share none of our classical liberal values should make you think.

I'm not sure if I buy the demographic line completley, but I also think we shrug it off at our own peril. It's not as if civilizations haven't crumbled before..

Cicero, you elide the distinction between intentional and accidental killing. Probably many or most Americans are willing to tolerate accidental civilian deaths as an unfortunate fact of war, but if you ask whether they support the US Army setting off bombs in Arab restaurants, mosques, or office buildings, I would hope the percentage who answers affirmatively is dramatically lower.

I worry about domestic terrorism but even more about how idiotically the US might react to another attack. 9/11 brought us the Patriot Act, NSA surveillance and the Iraq War. What might the next one bring?
