One reason Paul may not command much respect in the national press is that he's a member of the House. Congressmen rarely perform well in presidential contests. Even Fred Thompson's managed to win a statewide election, which is the political equivalent of getting your four-year degree. In contrast, Paul is a niche politician whose managed to hold a single congressional district without demonstrating any statewide appeal.
