You've got crazy people north of the DMZ with enough artillery pointed at Seoul to level it in about 10 minutes. They'd probably prefer spending a few decades rehabilitating an economic basket case to dealing with that situation going bad.

I read somewhere (but can't remember where) that South Koreans don't even view re-unification as an option. They think it would be nice if N. Korea wasn't a shithole, but don't want to be handicapped by them.
