I hate the idea of a federal ID card, but voting is a special case. I guess I'd recommend the voter registration card in order to vote. But how do you get one of those if you can't show an ID?

I do prove who I am by knowing my SS, birth date and signing the poll book with a signature that matches the one on record at the Board of Elections. Though I am of fortunate enough economic stature to own a motor vehicle & the requisite drivers license I do not say so what regarding low income, disabled and elderly people who do not. If photo ID is truly as easy to get as you claim, then it would be worthless.

somnamblst,
it is that easy. its called an identification card, most if not all states have them. ever seen a 8yr old with an ID card? of course you have. are they driving?
also, owning a motor vehicle, (or a car to the rest of us) is not neccesary to get a drivers license (which is different from a state ID card) anywhere. that is plain nonsense.
the fact is that state ID cards are so easy to obtain that they're practically worthless. all they prove is that you have a face and a name to go with that face. for the purposes of flying we show the IDs for no other reason then to make everyone "feel" safe, it accomplishes nothing. did the 9/11 attackers not have IDs? of course they did. do we require people to show IDs getting on trains? no of course not.
i don't much care...i have to show an ID to do just about anything now, why not voting?
