A lot of them are produced in Miami now. I think California used to have a comparatively welcoming legal structure in regards to porn, ie, they had a court case that ruled that paying someone for sex wasn't prostitution so long as the person paying wasn't receiving the sex. I don't know if that's changed. It may just be that filming the sex for distribution makes it legal now.
Ah, here's the relavent law:
"California’s Penal Code, section 653.20:
653.20. For purposes of this chapter, the following definitions
apply:
(a) "Commit prostitution" means to engage in sexual conduct for
money or other consideration, but does not include sexual conduct
engaged in as a part of any stage performance, play, or other
entertainment open to the public."
Either way, I think many states can still bust people for making porn under prostitution laws, exempting stuff like husband/wife teams.
