I think we all know cigarette taxes is not about more revenue for the government, it is just another lie like the original one about cigarette taxes being used to treat sick smokers. It is also a fallacy that the current anti-smoking movement is simply a populist movement by OCD non-smokers. It is being funded by the big drug companies and for good reason. They stand to make huge profits on replacing the nicotine people depend on with anti-fat pills and other drugs. If you thought only the tobacco companies are evil, look again.

Wasn't the basis for the tobacco lawsuits that people were tricked into smoking and then surreptitiously addicted to nicotine, that it was beyond their control that they started smoking and that they couldn't quit?

If so, what is the justification for the government punishing these unwilling addicts? Anyway, sin taxes are stupid and moralistic, but the hypocrisy of the government going after smokers in the wake of their billion plus dollar settlement is beyond the pale. Though oddly, beyond the pale is more like par for the course.
