Also, since when has it been the responsibility of Science or The People or whatever to stop people from wasting their money and believing in stupid crap? Are the people suckered into giving the CoS tons of money because they think it'll clean their Thetans or whatever really any more in need of intervention than the schmucks who shell out $5000 for a Segway thinking it'll make them cool/help the environment/benefit ANYONE other than the manufacturers of Segways in ANY WAY?

I'm pretty sure stupid people being tricked into spending money was one of the underpinnings of the modern American Capitalist System, anyway.

I personally don't think it's incompatible with libertarianism to believe that preventing out-and-out fraud is a legitimate function of government.

That's quite apart from all the other bad stuff that the CoS are known for (seriously, the term "fucking lunatics" springs to mind) - Sweeney's allegations seem believable to me.
