Believe it or not a Ditka victory would not have been a guarantee. I assure you people here in Nebraska love former Cornhuskers coach Tom Osborne just as much if not more than Illinoisans love Ditka, and yet Osborne lost his bid for Governor in 2006. Though he did win a House seat but I think he ran unopposed. Just thought I would throw that out there for anybody who thinks Ditka would've been a guaranteed victor. Not to give this hypothetical any creedence.
