I too stood aghast, but I think he was referring to "mutually agreed to"* arbitration by Sharia judges applying Sharia principles, not an alternative to the entire U.K. legal system.

The Amish do this. The Mormons had a quite elaborate internal legal system in the early Utah days, and I think they still do civil arbitration amongst themselves.

*To the extent that, e.g., women can "mutually agree to" anything in Islam.


Kip, I think that is a fairly generous reading of the situation. It seems to me to be much more of a cultural surrender by the Archbishop. We're going to have sharia law eventually and we should probably just get over our western selves accept it now.

That's a depressing statement on state of affairs over there.
