what can possibly said here by me now, that has not already been said by others, many times, better expressed, but only to note in passing that i AGAIN marval at the integrity and beauty and concision of your blog, so artfully done with Thoreauian economy of metr'e and form. bravo. thank you, a great service to all, high, low, and middle, generous of heart, accurate in content, ample in size, clear in vision, and a labor of true love and care. dk

The Vigorito lecture should be on everyone's to-do-list this week! Anyone who reads Chess Horizons knows that David writes interesting material culled from his own games. I suspect his lecture will be of similar quality.

Will there be any rating limitations for the simul?

bring it on carey! simuls are better for me than regular play, because the more time I have, the more likely I am to think of something stupid. we need 10 to make it happen too...

Thanks. Do any of you know why the bishops have cuts in em up at the top? I never got that.
Anyone remember that nintendo game where it was like chess, but better cause when two of the men land on the same square, you get to fight it out to see which one wins.

Ben, go to

and look at the headgear worn by the bishop of the Episcopal Church and you'll get the picture. I think it's the fifth picture down the page.

Battlechess? That was a great game. They need to remake that, only with more violence.

Another problem with Battlechess is that the outcomes of the fights are pre-determined. Whoever initiates the capture always wins.
If the game is ever remade, the captures should be resolved Mortal Kombat style with each side having a roughly equal chance of prevailing (subject to the players' respective skills with the controllers). The possibility that I could lose my light-squared bishop for nothing on move 4 would probably be enough make me give up the Spanish Exchange for good!

Maybe Mortal Combat style, but the battles are slightly titled in favor of: 1) the piece who started the battle 2) the "stronger" piece. Each piece could have its own set of special moves. I love this game!
Just think-- there could be a checkmate on the board, but you could have a scrappy-fighting king that keeps beating back challenge after challenge!

Battle chess was fun, much better than regular chess, but the game I was thinking of was ARCHON: The Light and the Dark for the 8 bit NES. The different men in your army had special abilities like healing, teleporting, firing projectiles, etc. Unlike Battle Chess, each time two pieces went to the same square there was an interactive battle, like a role playing game. There were a couple of sequels to it. I personally find it to be far superior and much more advanced than chess, they should make a modern installment.

I am much better at Mortal Kombat than I am at chess. Unfortunately if I were going to play it I'd have to pick up a strategy guide because I'm no better at remembering combo moves and finishers than I am at remembering chess openers (or chess combinations for that matter.)

Hey,
You start dissing the C64, and you are dissing me. The C64 had the best games of all computer systems, ever. I will crush you over the board next time, holding this memory of C64's greatness in mind as inspiration to demolish that closed Silician thing you play.

I'm frankly stunned that Ben is old enough to remember Archon. (Which rocked.)

I'm 27, so I think it's fair to say I'm a child of the 80s. The majority of my life has revolved around burgers, wrestling, thrash metal, and gore flicks (all of which are very intrisnically connected with that decade). Thus, it should come as no surprise.

Dave,
If I knew that you had a stage for your lecture and your subsequent, I hope, simul at the BCC, I would say "break a leg!" But that is usually reserved for actors. But Dave, you are not an actor, you are the real thing. Good luck tonight!
