Thanks to information supplied by Stephen Dann, the first editor of Chess Horizons, the mystery of who won the Greater Boston Open in 1969 is solved. According to Dann, on page 5 in the first issue of CH in 1969 it states: "The 1969-70 MSCA tournament calendar was opened by 62 players crossing pawns at the Greater Boston Open at the Boston YMCU on Oct. 11-12. Dan Harrington emerged the victor in this five-round affair with a 5-0 score. Eight players tied for second with 4-1 scores." Dann points out that the report was supplied by Ben Landey, who was the MSCA tournament director. He also points out that Harrington won due to the fact that six other "top players" were competing in a concurrent round robin, won by Harry Lyman, 4-1, with Jack Peters finishing last without winning a single game. The state chess association, before it became MACA, was known as the MSCA - Massachusetts State Chess Association.
