Boylston Chess Club

Gravatar Paul's team was "Whopper, Big Mac, Small Fry, and a Lawer" (I think). Larry Christiansen on Board 1, Paul on board two, youngster Andrew Wang on board three, and Natasha Christiansen, Esq. on board 4.

In an ironic twist, they faced my team (Derek Slater, Tim Newman, me, and a last second pick up from NY Jim Frawley) in round 1! Andrew beat me, but it was my only loss for the tournament. Unfortunately, our team finished 3-3. I believe the team of Vigorito, Martirosov, Krasik, and Pellows finished with 5.5/6.

Fun was had by all.

Gravatar We scored 5.5/6 also and tied for 2nd( 3rd on tiebrakes). To me its incredible that they won the tiebrakes because we had faced much tougher teams in RD 5/6. In Rd 6(final round) we defeated a team which was 5/5, (opening a way for a clear winner in the other match where 5-0 teams were paired) and had lost a total of 2! games out 20. We hope, as I believe Larry suggested himself, to play a tiebraking blitz match with them.

Gravatar I believe tiebreaks for amateurs work strangely. It's like your score against a team times the number of points they scored.

Gravatar What happened to last year's champs?

Gravatar I believe the G-8 Predecessors tried to defend their crown, but didn't do so well this year.

Gravatar Yes, we had the same team, but lost our match in the second round and ended up finishing in fifth place with 5/6. Incidentally, it was nice to see three Boston teams in the top five.

Gravatar Congratulations to Bennet's Fellows for a great result! Third is nothing to sneeze at. I have heard it said that the key to success at the Amateur Team is Board 3.

Gravatar I agree wholeheatedly!

(I was board 3 on our team.)

Gravatar How did the other Boston Teams do? I have not seen any reports on the event.

Gravatar I think having so many Boston teams near the top says a lot about the quality of the chess our area is playing these days!

Gravatar I doubt that the chess players in MA are somwhow stronger than say in NJ; i think it has a lot to do with personal friendships among the team members as well as how seriously you approach this event.

Gravatar I would like to add that the team BU Baku representing Boston University won the top U2100 with 5 of 6. The team was Max Enkin (also a Boylston player), Roza Eynullayva, Melvin Zhang (a player at the Boylston since he was one of those little kids), Jacob Schwartman (a BU freshman 6-year med student -- from NJ), and Elnara Eynullaeva, Roza's sister at UMass-Amherst.

So, it is striking how many Boston teams emerged among the leaders.
