Boylston Chess Club

Gravatar Thanks Ken. My suggestion in the comments to your earlier post is still valid. Every tournament player should buy (and read!) a copy of the USCF Rules. It's only $15 and it will almost definitely gain you a half or full point somewhere along the line.

Gravatar Hi Matt,

As someone who used to know the rulebook inside and out, let me remind people to be certain to get the most recent version of the rules. I've been on the wrong end of several rules debates because I've been consulting my older book, and the times, they are a changin'.

And as much as I want to support local used bookstores, buyer beware-- I've yet to find a modern rulebook in a brick and mortar store. Sometimes I find hilarously old ones.

Jason

Gravatar I've seen the latest one in Barnes & Noble. It's the 5th edition.

Of course, you can support US Chess and order it from them:

Do NOT buy a book called "The Official Rules of Chess" by Schiller. It is not "Official" by anyone's standards, except Schiller.

Gravatar Funny. I just went into the Harvard COOP bookstore, and they have the USCF Official Rules, the 4th edition. That is the old one I have.

Gravatar FYI,

I'll be directing this month's Thursday Night Swiss, so come one come all! I'll be happy to answer any and all clock questions (during my opponent's move).

Gravatar Matt,

You must be quite a fast player to make an offer like that!!

The older, basic digital clock I bought years ago has the seemingly nonstandard characteristic that it allows time-increment (5 seconds only, no other options), and it adds those 5 seconds to your existing time, with the only limitation being that you can never exceed your *initially* allotted time. So if you were playing 5-minute but had dropped down to 3 minutes left, if you moved quickly and often enough, you could work your way back up to 5 minutes, but never more time than that.

In any case, I've got my Chronos GX now.
