I generally feel you should take care of things that bother you - if those freckles annoy you when you look in the mirror and there's a safe way to get rid of them -- go for it. of course it would be great if we could all look in the mirror, smile and love what we see, but for most of us that's not always possible without a dab of cream, makeup, a flatiron etc. Where's the line between a little self improvement and self loathing? Well, that's for each to figure out for herself....

These days its a different story and for the most part they stay very light, but I dont try and hide them with skin lightener anymore either. My husband would prefer to see them and every summer I slide off the wagon a little just so they stand out a little more before caking on the sunscreen.

Being super duper pale, I wear SPF 30 every day of my life...and I've still noticed a slight increase in my frecklage since the warmer weather hit and I've been outside more.

Thought my freckles are still light and not in great quantities, they're there and they make me nervous - everyone in my family has had some sort of pre-cancerous chunk of their face or ear or decollage removed. Grossss.

I think I need to up the ante to SPF 1,000,000 because the sun's getting through my 30!!

question though - does having freckles necessarily mean your skin is damaged? i've always had them, and they don't really change. i can see if a person who'd never had them suddenly found spots, that'd be bad, but what about people who are just predisposed to them? btw i wear at least spf 30 every day, and wore spf 70 when i was on vacation.

I try to keep them from getting worse, and try to make them fade, but it feels like a losing battle. I agree with the bit about how losing freckles seems to make your other features stand out - my skin is otherwise porcelain and I would just love not to have them marring the look I'm going for. I use high spf physical blockers daily, wear spf hats, use prescription Avage, had a TCA peel & use 4% hydroquinone - still, however light... they haunt me!

Normally my freckles \"pop\" out in the summertime, which I love, but I haven't gotten as much sun this summer because the weather has been so rainy and strange in NYC. I wear foundation daily, but not for the purpose of covering my freckles. I think freckles make me look a little more unique, especially as not a lot of people around here have them. I guess I can understand wanting to lighten them if you only had a few random ones.

$\"Gravatar\"$ it's sun damage. plain and simple. and nothing is cute about it. i am korean and it's pretty abnormal for koreans to be freckled. i must have some irish catholic blood in me somewhere. so people, esp other asians, comment on it because it's not considered cute, just weird. anyhow i didn't mind the few spatterings i had on my nose but it's gotten UGLY. it's more like sun spots/patches than freckles.

i've tried all topical products under the sun and the bottom line is, if u really want to get rid of em, u gotta laser. i wish i had just invested in laser treatments versus the thousands of dollars on skincare and makeup i spent trying to fix it and cover it up. i had two laser photofacials and they got rid of most of the ugly splotchiness which bothered me. i still have freckles and it will take a lot more treatments to get rid of em all. now i try to be diligent about HIGH spf with physical blockers (zinc, titanium dioxide) to prevent further damage.

one final note-- i'm getting freckles on my MOUTH. like within my actual lip i notice light splotches beginning to form. ack.

Same thing -freckles across my nose and a smattering here and there. . . regardless more of them as stated above is not a good thing; however, my skin care professional gave me hydroquinone and I used it, but with caution since there are some questions about continued use of the product. As a result, I have used other products with equal or better results than the hydroquinone.

Of course, I am living right for the summer in a place that has not stopped raining since May 27. . northeast. Give me the SUN, please.

Gretchen - I know how you feel! Sometimes I feel like my freckles come out more just from being in the HEAT! Makes me so paranoid that I'm cooking myself and will end up getting bits of skin sliced off by the derm within a few years.

kamo - they are sun damage, they're caused by UVB exposure. But it's a genetic predisposition, and it's pretty much impossible to stay completely out of the sun, so I feel like you can't totally avoid them...some will pop up eventually if they're meant to. I doubt that the few you've always had indicate any major damage to your skin, probably just normal sun exposure. Would love to hear a dermatologist's opinion on this, though.

Mikaela - Wow, you have an impressive arsenal there! If you stop by here again, tell me more about Avage and the TCA peel.

Stephanie - Kudos to you for embracing your freckles! And I totally agree, NYC has been beyond dismal. I've been soaking up as much sun as I can now that it seems to have (temporarily) returned.

Suzanne Choe - wow, good to know about the laser photofacials! The topical treatments are working for me...for now. But would love to look into a laser facial down the road. As for sunblock, I would love to use high SPF physical blockers too, but unfortunately the zinc and titanium dioxide clog my pores something fierce. I usually go with SPF 30+ with avobenzone, that seems to do the trick.

cookie - what other products have you used? I'm with you on the worries about using hydroquinone for extended periods. I usually use it til I'm satisfied, then toss the bottle so I'm not tempted to keep slathering it on. Would love to know what else has worked for you!

Caroline - It definitely works, the only thing is that you have to stick with it for a few weeks, and wear high SPF DILIGENTLY because it makes you more prone to burns. But for me, it's definitely worth it!

I try to be diligent about sun protection -- I always wear at least spf 30 -- but freckles still show up on my face, shoulders, and arms (especially my arms!). They're not very noticeable, but they can still bug me! I certainly don't mind seeing them on other people, though.

One thing that DOES bug me is that people seem to have this disdain for my keeping my skin pale, and keep telling me I should go tanning. Very frustrating as I don't whiten my skin at all, and I'm outside in the sun as often as everyone else I know. This is just its natural color!

Freckles caused from sunburns are actual damaged skin cells and can grow in size with time. Hydroquinone is the superior ingredient when it comes to fading freckles and any other sort of hypopigmentation. However, it's also been a bit controversial and banned from being sold in the EU. What have you heard about it? Is it safe to continually use?

When I was younger, all of my other friends had freckles, and I wanted them too! At my private school, freckles were the norm! As I grew older (and switched to a public school-by choice) I realizes I really didn't want them. I learned about sun damage, and most of the girls in my class were trying to get rid of their freckles.
So for me, I'm glad I don't have freckles-though they do look good on most! I'll stick to my face tanner (broke me out last week, ugh) and spf 60!

My derm said that I am especially prone since with my hair and eyes, and have a lot of melanin, even though my skin is so pale.

I just began a series of peels and they are AMAZING. Highly recommend.

$\"Gravatar\"$ I don't know that I always buy that its sun damage, mostly because I was born with my freckles, as was my younger sister. There are pictures of us as infants (2 months old or younger) with freckles, so while most cases of freckles do have something to do with sun damage, I doubt severely that it's as bad as a lot of people think it is. Generally, an antioxidant serum and a good sunblock is the trick. Unless you're inside 24/7 you're going to be exposed to sunlight and minimizing damage is the name of the game. You can't eliminate it completely.

as far as long term results, the Avage is probably the best thing since it reverses sun damage, is mega anti-aging and helps to lighten spots + it helps the prescription 4% hydroquinone penetrate better.
(Btw, for those asking about hydroquinone - my derm says I can stay on it indefinitely since I am so fair skinned, there wouldn't be a hypo-pigmentation situation like there could be with darker skin, and I can use it all over my face as opposed to spot treating).

The TCA peel was awesome at first - totally fresh pale skin that was pretty much freckle free... but that didn't last (however, they are better than they were). I wear sun block from the time I wake up to the time I get ready for bed, and still they've slowly come back. My derm says my best shot for totally obliterating them is Fraxel. Since that could be a huge cost at $1,000 each session & who knows how many treatments would be needed, I'm waiting for now (they seem to think I'd only need 1 or 2 sessions). I would be furious if I had it done & it turned out like the TCA - good at first, but then the freckles would slowly creep back.
I'm wishing for an Anne Hathaway/Liv Tyler type of complexion, so these damn spots are just driving me crazy!

I purchased PCASkin Fade Gel and have been using for about 2 weeks and starting to see results. It is very challenging to keep up with the sunscreen though- even for taking the dog out briefly to pee in the morning, I worry that my spots are coming back!
Once my spots have faded I am wondering how difficult it will be to keep them from quickly returning.

I'm using the NeoCutis Blanche with 4% and it's totally working! I also have a smattering of true sun-damage freckles across my chest from my youth, when I went to an outdoor concert and wound up with heat stroke from such a bad sunburn. So, I'd do exactly what you're doing. Once my face is cleared, I'm definitely going to attack the chest!

I'm obsessive with the SPF too as a result of my love of hydroquinone. I've found the Cetaphil with SPF 50 to be wonderful...good price point, non-greasy, and...it works!

When it comes down to it I think if you are unhappy with your freckles then you should do something about it. When I want a more even skin tone but don't want to look too covered up I use Clinique Almost Makeup. It makes your freckles look a lot less noticeable. I use Smashbox photofinish foundation and Halo powder when I want tons of coverage. I'm sure that when I am older I will probably want to completely rid myself of my freckles because I don't think they are too cute on older women, but that is my personal opinion. Congrats on finding a product that works for you Kristen! I will definetly keep that in mind when or if I change my mind about my freckles. $\"\"$

I always had freckles and they weren't bad; were cute actually; but they don't fade with age, they seem to miltiply, and now that I'm 46 and have to really watch the skin blotchiness and under eye darkness thing freckles can just add to the overall undereye nastiness. Some days it was so bad that I didn’t want to leave the house. It looked like I had a mustache tattooed on. I received a Skin Print as a gift from my mom. They took several types of images of my face. I couldn’t believe the sun damage that wasn’t even visible. They suggested their Make-Over serum to help with my dark spots.
